Ask CoSnow: when do Colorado Pass sales begin?

Q: Hi Colorado Snow: I will be a first time buyer of the Colorado Pass. Do you know exactly when the Colorado pass goes on sale on Labor Day weekend (8/28, 8/29)? I was planning to leave for Lake Powell on 8/29; however, if the pass is available only on the weekend, I may need to cancel the Lake Powell trip. Thank you in advance for your reply. Aloha, Susan

A: Hi Susan, the pass sales will begin on the Labor Day weekend and will continue (usually) into early November at a slew of locations across the metro area:

  • Colorado Ski and Golf: Aurora, Arvada, Littleton and Colorado Springs
  • Boulder Ski Deals: Boulder
  • REI: Denver Flagship, Boulder, Colorado Springs, Fort Collins, Lakewood and Englewood
  • Breeze Ski Rentals: Lakewood, Dumont/Downieville
  • Orchard Town Center: Westminster
  • The Shops at Northfield Stapleton
  • Park Meadows Shopping Center: Dining Hall
  • FlatIron Crossing Mall: Food Court

There are also a number of special events where new passes can be purchased:

  • Welcome Freeriders: September 4 / 5:00pm at CU Boulder
  • Brew at the Zoo: September 5 / 6:30pm at the Denver Zoo
  • CSU Annual Snowrider Expo: September 17 / 9:00am in Fort Collins

No need to cancel the trip–the pass will be here when you get back! Thanks for the question.

Our friends over at SkiNet are running an awesome contest where the winner can win Atomic skis, a Dakine luggage bag, or a ski jacket. Plus, you’re entered to get updates in their weekly newsletter. Sounds like win-win-win to me? Click here to enter the SkiNet sweepstakes.

Winter Park is opening tomorrow morning at 9 AM and both Eldora and Echo Mountain will be open this weekend. These three are local favorites for two very different reasons, Winter Park offers the terrain we call Mary Jane. Eldora and Echo are both close and easy. If you’re heading up, let @cosnow know how it goes.

A few quick thoughts on the new Gondola at River Run in Keystone. 1) Moving it closer (away from the slope) is nice. 2) The mid-mountain station is great because beginners always struggle with that last chunk of the hill and can down-load. 3) No ‘gear racks’ attached to the cabins, maybe that’s coming soon but its crowded ride (with 8 people). 4) Overall, the gondola is a great improvement to the resort. Click here for a few pictures of the insane lines on opening day.

Discussion on the new Keystone gondola today prompted an interesting bit of trivia: it costs resorts anywhere from $100,000 to $300,000 to make snow for the super pipes (half-pipes) in Colorado.
