Is anyone headed to #SIA in Denver this weekend? I’m trying to find good reasons to hang out indoors and coming up short… no offense, exhibitors.

It’s always a sight to see walking around downtown Breckenridge and seeing the snow piles and sculptures but these… these sculptures are world class. Be sure to check them out this week(end).

Denver thinks about 2022 winter Olympic games

From The Denver Exploratory Committee’s release:

The opportunity to pursue the Games is an endeavor worth taking very seriously,” Hickenlooper said. “We’ve asked this exploratory committee to explore all issues relevant to Denver potentially submitting a bid to the USOC. Those issues include making certain any bid would be financially sound and will help economic growth in the state. We would also want to find ways to showcase Colorado as the healthiest state in the nation for work and play no matter of a bid’s outcome.

Remember how we almost had the games in 1976? (No? Me neither…)

Vail Snow Daze early-season concert series begins tonight

Ah Snow Daze, a time of free concerts, lodging deals, and all around excitement for the new season. This year’s festivities have been going on all week but the real fun (free concerts!) kick-off tonight. Here’s the low-down:

Thursday, Dec 8: Guster (Solaris, 6:30pm)
Friday, Dec 9: Jakob Dylan and Band (Solaris, 6:30pm)
Saturday, Dec 10: Yukon Kornelius (Ford Park, 6:30pm)
Sunday, Dec 11: Polish Ambassador (Checkpoint Charlie, 3:30pm)

The Southwest Ice Rink at Skyline Park is back

On behalf of the Downtown Denver Partnership and thousands of Denver ice skaters, we’re thrilled for Southwest Airlines to sponsor the Southwest Rink at Skyline Park for the second year. Last year, during our 65 days of skating, 31,726 skaters took to the ice. From family outings to broomball games to “Date and Skate” nights, people of all ages were drawn to Downtown Denver, a key goal of the Downtown Denver Partnership.

The ice rink is open to the public from November 25th through February 14th and free if you bring your own skates (otherwise a skate rental is $2).

It’s not a bad deal if you’re looking to do some outdoor activities when you’re not up in the hills.

Colorado Triple Play: Aspen Snowmass, Steamboat, Winter Park pass

Hot off the presses, here’s Colorado’s newest ski pass:

Three of Colorado’s most historic and celebrated ski towns have joined forces to unveil the new Colorado Triple Play featuring an unprecedented two days of skiing and riding at Aspen/Snowmass, Steamboat and Winter Park Resort during the 2011/2012 winter season.

You read that right. For $299 you get 6 days of skiing at world class resorts (2 days each). For those of you playing at home, that works out to $50 per day.

Sales will start today at the Colorado Ski and Snowboard Expo, online at ColoradoTriplePlay.com, and at some local Christy Sports Stores — all while supplies last.

As a quick reminder, the opening dates are posted:

Winter Park: opens November 16, 2011
Steamboat: open November 23, 2011
Aspen Snowmass: opens November 24, 2011

cosnow’s take

As a local who has already bought one of the “big name” passes, this seems to be too-little-too-late for folks who already made a decision about where they want to ski this season. With the economy how it is, sure, this could be a great addition to the days already planned, but I’m likely not going to drop another 300 bucks this season.

Since each of these resorts are a little further off the typical I-70 corridor, it’s also a bit harder to get to and stay. My guess is the plan is to have folks do a long weekend at each: stay a night, eat at the restaurants, etc. It makes for a spendy trip if you’re not willing to do the day drives up and back from Denver. Though, $50 to ski at Aspen is unreal.

Hopefully this sticks around next season, I’m interested to see how it does.

Colorado Ski and Snowboard Expo is this weekend

The Colorado Ski and Snowboard Expo is on its 20th year this year and will take place Friday, November 4 through Sunday the 6th. This is a great pre-season “warm up” event where you can find great deals on gear, lodging and passes. I hope to snag a new set of skis and boots, myself.

It is the single largest ski and snowboard sale in the state with more than 20,000 square feet of retail space jammed with excess inventory from last season, from all over the country and from the top outdoor gear companies. Plus, all 26 Colorado resorts are on site with “show-only” specials on everything from season passes, lift tickets, lodging and lessons to discounts on dining and mountain resort activities. For most resorts, this is also the last chance to snag early season prices on season passes and lift ticket deals.

Admission is $12 for adults or $10 with a discount coupon available at any Colorado Ski & Golf store or purchased in advance at www.OnTheSnow.com. Kids 12 and under are free. Hours are noon to 10 pm on Friday, Nov. 4, Saturday from 10 am to 8 pm and Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm.

Rocky Mountain Brewfest

In addition to all the standard deals and family-friendly entertainment (bouncy castle, anyone?), this year the Expo will be hosting the Rocky Mountain Brewfest featuring local breweries including Breckenridge, Bristol, Oskar Blues, and Odell.

Tickets to one of the four 3-hour Rocky Mountain Brew Fest tasting sessions are $25 or $20 if purchased by Nov. 3. Admission to the Brew Fest also requires an Expo ticket. A $30 combination ticket can be purchased online by using the promo code BREW. Tasting times are: Friday, Nov. 4 from 6-9 pm; Saturday, Nov. 5 from 1-4pm or from 5-8pm; and Sunday, Nov. 6 from 2-5pm.
