The opening day battle for 2008-2009 continues on and the winner is: a tie. Both Loveland and Arapahoe Basin will open at 8:30AM on October 15th (tomorrow). If you noticed yesterday, Arapahoe Basin announced the 15th at 9:00AM. Loveland then responded by announcing 8:30AM on the 15th. The two are now tied... who thinks Loveland will try 8:00AM?

I know, I know--it's only August but with the recent (dramatic) change in weather here in Denver (from sunny 90s to wet 60s) it's a nice reminder that the seasons will change and we'll be back on the slopes in no time. So, the question, have you bought a 2008/2009 season pass yet? If you're still thinking about it here's the scoop as of August 15th (prices and purchase options are subject to change throughout the season.) Colorado Pass Any reader will know this is my favorite pass as it gets you access to awesome mountains for beginners and experts alike. The extra ...

Ask CS: Too late for season passes?

Q: I am moving back to Colorado late this March. Do any resorts sell late season passes (Late season Buddy Pass) Something like that? I hope so! Daily rates at Vail,Breck, and Keyston would get expensive! Posted by Lance Gartner A: Hey Lance, great question and the simplest answer: you're out of luck. The Colorado Pass is no longer on sale (access to all Vail resorts including Breckenridge and Keystone) as this is the definition of price discrimination. The same goes for the Intrawest passes (Copper Mountain, Winter Park and Steamboat). The beauty of a monopoly is the fact the consumer will sometimes ...

3rd Annual Vertical Rally at Loveland

Categories: Events, Loveland

The 3rd Annual Vertical Rally for the American Cancer Society has raised $370 dollars and there's little over a month until the race. Something tells me that Colorado skiers and snowboarders could raise at least 10x that much money. If you want to help out there are three ways to participate: compete as an individual, join a team (5-15) or sponsor a participant. Teams and individuals compete on total dollars raised and total vertical feet. Prizes will be awarded and plenty of fun will be had. Details Who: Individuals and teams (companies, church groups, etc.) When: February 23rd, 2008 Where: Loveland Ski Area Why: Raise funds ...

Our friends over at SkiNet are running an awesome contest where the winner can win Atomic skis, a Dakine luggage bag, or a ski jacket. Plus, you’re entered to get updates in their weekly newsletter. Sounds like win-win-win to me? Click here to enter the SkiNet sweepstakes.

Winter Park is opening tomorrow morning at 9 AM and both Eldora and Echo Mountain will be open this weekend. These three are local favorites for two very different reasons, Winter Park offers the terrain we call Mary Jane. Eldora and Echo are both close and easy. If you’re heading up, let @cosnow know how it goes.

A few quick thoughts on the new Gondola at River Run in Keystone. 1) Moving it closer (away from the slope) is nice. 2) The mid-mountain station is great because beginners always struggle with that last chunk of the hill and can down-load. 3) No ‘gear racks’ attached to the cabins, maybe that’s coming soon but its crowded ride (with 8 people). 4) Overall, the gondola is a great improvement to the resort. Click here for a few pictures of the insane lines on opening day.

Discussion on the new Keystone gondola today prompted an interesting bit of trivia: it costs resorts anywhere from $100,000 to $300,000 to make snow for the super pipes (half-pipes) in Colorado.
