It was so cold and so windy I didn’t take a single picture or enjoy much of the day. Although Summit had received a few inches by Sunday, it had all been blown off the slopes by Sunday morning. Everything was hard-packed, icy and wind-blown. I wish we had gone to Vail.

Anyway, we did a few runs on the front. There was a bit of a crowd in the morning but as soon as everyone realized it wasn’t worth it, they went home. The gondola was closed all day due to the high-winds and the visibility was pretty poor. So, luckily we had the place to ourselves by 10:30.

And to top it all off, the commute to and from Denver was delayed over an hour due to the roads and metering at the tunnel. From 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM, there was a 60 minute delay (the drive usually takes about 9 minutes) from Silverthorne to the east entrance to the Eisenhower Tunnel.

I’m likely not the only one getting frustrated at this point…

Another great Colorado web resource, this one by the I-70 Mountain Corridor Coalition: GoI70.com. I mentioned this site earlier in the year but it’s now live and ready for people to play with. It has everything from realtime traffic, weather, road conditions, ski resort snow reports, places to stay, things to do, and so on. The interactive map is an excellent resource.

But here’s the best part: the jackrabbits. A crowdsourced collection of individuals that provide live road and weather updates. If this gets enough traction the value could be immeasurable. I’ve tried to keep people updated with real-time traffic status while I’m on the roads, but a centralized resource will reach more people and provide more value. I’m excited to see how this goes. Sign up to be a GoI70 jackrabbit today.

With airlines now charging as much as $100 to bring skis on the plane, rental shops are becoming a solid option for someone traveling by air to their next ski destination.

Besides traditional, retail rental locations a number of delivery rental companies are making a foot hold in many Western resorts. Ski Butlers, a ski rental delivery company started in Utah, has just opened yet another location, this one in Telluride, Colorado. Ski Butlers now serves all major resorts in British Columbia, California, Utah & Wyoming.

With prices being competitive with all local ski shops, rental delivery is a nice alternative to those looking at renting equipment without the hassle of early morning lines at the mountain ski shop. Customers can log onto Ski Butlers website, and enter their skier information, credit card number, and where and when they would like their equipment delivered. Certified ski technicians come to the customer and do all fitting and adjustments, at your accommodations, while you wait. It’s that simple.

When you’re packing up for your next ski trip save your self some headache and leave your skis at home.

Click here to check out SkiButlers.com.

I just spent an awesome (long) weekend up in Keystone and I had a blast. It’s amazing the many things you can do in the mountains and never get bored. Here’s the top 4 things I recommend you do if you have some extra time:

Ski the Outback. I had never been as far back as I had until a friend led me around. Sometimes that’s all it takes: someone else to explore with you. With plenty of hard blues and expert diamonds theres something for anyone riding intermediate-and-up. Be sure to hit the trees off of Wolverine. The best part? Experts don’t often head to Keystone so you’ll have plenty of room to yourself!

Night ski. For most people a day of skiing and snowboarding ends around 2 or 3 when the lifts start shutting down. But, at Keystone your day doesn’t end until 9pm! Head up Friday afternoon, ski all night and then get a full day on Saturday from open to close.

Ice skate at Lakeside. How often do you get to skate on an outdoor pond? Lakeside (due West of Mountain House (which is due West of River Run) has five-acres of Zamboni-maintained ice. If you get a condo your skating is free or else it’s $11 to skate and $7 for the rental. The surroundings are worth it.

Have a burger at Wolf Rock Brewery. Delicious burgers from one of the highest microbreweries you’ll ever visit. With a build-your-own-burger menu and your choice of buffalo, well, ’nuff said.

I’m speaking from very recent experience. Keystone (and all the other resorts) have tons of activities to keep you entertained. Sometimes the locals don’t stick around to explore all the other fun things to do off the slopes. Instead of taking an expensive flight somewhere warm this winter why not stay in the hills for a bit?
