It's fairly easy to sum up the conditions in Summit County lately: Spring weather with Fall snow and February crowds. In other words, it's unseasonably warm, beautiful blue skies, temperatures upwards of 30-40 degrees Fahrenheit, a base of 20-30 inches, and too many people headed to the hills on the weekend.

Here we are half-way through January 2010 and most of Colorado's most popular resorts are at 20-30" bases. Most resorts don't have enough snow to open up expert (non-man-made snow) terrain such as the Montezuma Bowl at Arapahoe Basin. So, it's with even one or two inches that we get excited. It's not much to get excited for, but it's something. Given the state of things, every little bit helps. Joel Gratz has more information on the wave of storms moving through Colorado this week. If you're looking for one of the best half-pipes in the world, get ready because Copper is opening the superpipe this weekend. It's built by the same group that builds the X Games and various other projects across the world. If you're curious, half-pipes cost at least $100,000 to build.

If you missed it last weekend: "Colorado powder hounds will get access to a new lift-served playground this week, as Arapahoe Basin announced the opening of Montezuma Bowl for Friday, Jan. 11. The 400-acre terrain expansion boosts the size of A-Basin by about 80 percent, a significant addition by any measure, especially for a small mountain that already skis big." Will the new lift-served land overfill the already too-crowded parking lots? Will back-country skiers head somewhere else to play? Time will tell.Read more at New West Snow Blog.
